| I often see the Song Thrush feeding on the ground with Blackbirds and Redwings. |
The Song Thrush measures 24cm. It's even brown upperparts and spotted underparts, together with pale yellowish-brown underwing, distinguish it from all other thrushes. Insects, spiders, and other small invertebrates are the main sorce of food but the favourite food is snails. The shells are hammered against stones until they break and the thrush can extract the flesh.

All the thrushes in Japan are shy and skulk around in the forest, in Europe they hop around in the garden!

Wonderful photo's of the trush. I love to hear it sing its beautiful melody's. I have them in my garden to and it's always amuses me when he try's to eat a snail.

Hi Sonjia :-) First of all apologies for missing commenting on your previous post but I am not too well at he moment and everything is more of an effort :-( Anyway, I thought your photos were superb. Many is the time my husband has been sent up the road with a torch and a bucketful of recently gathered snails to be released in a grassy area at a suitable distance...I swear that every time they marched right back down the road again like soldiers returning to barracks! ;-)
The beautiful Song Thrush is the perfect follow up. If there were more of them in my garden there might be less use for the torch and bucket ;-) Your photos of this lovely bird are beautiful. I do love to hear the Song Thrush singing particularly at dusk.

Thats quite true they are less shy in Europe than where you are Stuart,so they must be difficult to photograph,but then you have some fabulous Japanese species which are almost tame, and I love to see them on your blog.

The image of those snails marching streight back to your garden made me laugh out loud:) It's the best way to deal with the problem though
and we do exactly the same thing. I think I'll mark the shells next time, just to see if they can find their way back!!!
