BIRDS and SQUIRRELS.

Hello my dear blog friends. :) After 3 months I'm back, and I really did miss you all, and can hardly wait to get started. Pedro is still here, but wants to stay longer, which is fine by me, as I really enjoy his company but he has a lot of work to do and has some new clients which will keep him occupied whilst I blog. Over these three months we have had loads of fun, and I have taken a few nature photos, but need to sort them out into different posts starting this evening.

I think that I can hear thunder in the distance, hopefully it will rain, as the temperature  during the day has been 40 degrees in the shade for weeks now, and here in my bedroom where I sit at the computer it is 31 degrees. but an electric fan by the side of my desk keeps me cool.

Due to their successful breeding, the Great-Tit far outnumber the other bird species that visit my balcony.

The infantile Great Tit. This is one of five that followed their parents to my balcony., at first demanding to be fed, and then learning to feed on their own as the parents ignored their insistent cries

I witnessed a juvenile feeding from the plate  but then it asked the parents to be fed, but the adults by this time knew that their job had been done.

The Greenfinch disappeared for a while, but now they have returned.

They love the Sunflower seeds but have to compete with the squirrels, however if they come early enough  they get their fair share.

The daily visits from the Robin have also become a rare occasion and I miss their morning and their evening serenade.

The faithful Crested-Tit comes every day for the peanuts

The Blackbird also bred successfully, and  brought two female birds to my balcony. They perched on the railing but didn't attempt to go to the feeders. They were beauties with russet toned feathers, but I didn't manage to take a photo as they were such timid creatures and flew into a nearby tree after the male Blackbird had filled it's beak, probably waiting to be fed within the safety of the leaf covered tree.

The Blackbird sheltering from the rain in June.

The cheeky Red Squirrels come several times a day and when the Jays fly in to pick up a peanut, the squirrels become confrontational and chase them away, and it's not surprising that the Jays are afraid when you look at the length of the squirrels claws .

I was sitting on my balcony swing when I saw the Wood pigeon alight on top of a tree. I have tried to cox them to my balcony by scattering corn, but they remain indifferent.

One last photo of a squirrel, and my post is finished for this week. I did try to complete it last night, but I had agreed to watch the Olympics with Pedro, and it was very entertaining viewing.

It is so good to have you back. I've missed you. I am a bit envious of your wonderful balcony where you see so much of nature. Squirrels do adore peanuts, and I guess all birds wait until it has had its fill. I do enjoy our gray squirrels trying to take over the feeder from each other when they are young and learning. They are so entertaining trying to succeed at climbing the pole to the feeder. Eventually they all succeed, and then we have to add more sunflower seeds than usual. It's worth it though to watch them. Very glad you and Pedro are enjoying your time together. You're a wonderful blog friend, and I look forward to your next post.

Dear Sonjia :)

I'm glad you are back too. I have missed your beautiful photos of birds and animals. 40 degrees sounds terrible. I'm glad you have an electric fan, so you can have it cooler in your bedroom. The highest temperature here this summer have been 27 degrees. We have got a lot of rain both in June and July. I hope the weather will improve in August.
Take care, and have a nice new week!
All the best to you!
Marit

Having such a long visit with your grandson sounds wonderful, though you didn’t say (that I know of) if he is a child, adolescent, or adult visitor. Your birds look lovely.

Hello Sonjia,
A beautiful series of photos of the birds and squirrels.
I think the young great tits are so cute.
What a shame that it is so warm where you are, it is far too warm worldwide.
We had a bad spring, but now it is warm here too, tomorrow it can be 30 degrees, because there is a lot of water in the Netherlands, is it always so stuffy here because of the moisture and because I have asthma, these high temperatures are no fun for me.
I wish you a nice week.
Greetings Irma

Hello, Sonjia: It was quite delightful to see your name pop up in my blog stream after a long absence. I am glad to hear that you had a fine summer with Pedro, although I had no doubts that you would. Thirty- one degrees in the bedroom seems a little too hot for my liking, so I am glad that the fan helps to circulate the air and give at least a little cooling comfort. The parade of birds to your balcony continues to impress us all and we are envious as you might imagine. Pedro is no doubt happy that you don’t tell him to cope for himself the way the parent birds do to their children! Keep enjoying life and stay in good health. Hugs and kisses - David

Glad you're here again... I'm glad you had a wonderful time. Your photos speak volumes... so beautiful. Thank you.
Our second brood of redstarts has fledged... two young birds flew into my house and I gently guided them out again. The young storks have also left their nests.
I'm excited to look at the Oslofjord in Norway... you can see an osprey nest - nrk.no/piip - the young osprey that is left will soon leave the nest and make its first flight.
Many greetings to you and a hug from Viola

I missed you too, dear Sonjia! But I'm glad that you had such a good time with your grandson and that Pedro is still staying with you!
It's too hot here in Austria, too (for me), but luckily not 40 degrees. (It's just over 30 outside and 27 inside.) Good thing you have a fan - me too.
Oh, what an adorable young great tit! It's funny that children, whether human or animal, try to keep their parents occupied for longer, even when they could already be independent. It's great that squirrels and so many birds continue to visit you - some more often, some less often. There's also less bird activity here in my garden than there was a month ago. The young have all flown out and so the blackbirds and great tits have become rare garden guests. Only finches, sparrows and collared doves are often seen and heard here. Speaking of hearing: I have now installed a "Merlin" app on my phone, which I can use to identify bird calls. If you are interested in which birds I heard in the forest near us, you can find out in my blog. I'm glad you're back!
Hugs!
All the best, Traude

Hello Sonjia. It's good to see you back and on your usual excellent photographic form. I too took 3 months off, mainly because of the awful winter weather and not being able to get out. It is better now that summer is here.

Hi Sonjia,
Great to hear from you again. I love all your birds and squirrels. So pleased to hear that they have bred successfully. We have a lot of birds in our woods, but this year I have found a few nestlings dead on the ground. I am not sure what did this.
Yesterday morning I was woken early by a mallard on the pond that has ducklings. I heard it quacking loudly and looked out of the window to see her flying backwards and forwards across the pond and landing at each end. Then I noticed that one of what I thought was a duckling was an otter, chasing after them. I took the dogs out for a walk around the pond and hopefully scared the otter away. The ducklings emerged one by one from the vegetation and joined their mother, who then took them down to the river. Sadly there weren't as many as there had been ten days ago, but at least some survived the ordeal.
