- On the tenth of March Will came on to my balcony and ate from the wooden feeder, and I took loads of photos to share. Please forgive the fact that they are all very similar, I just kept clicking away, enjoying the spectacle of Will at the wooden box feeder for the very first time. Will likes the cake I fill it with, and so do the birds and squirrels. This cake does not have walnuts, it is flavoured with orange juice, but the birds and squirrels love it. As you know oranges are a great source of vitamin C, and the juice can help the birds stay healthy during the months when bugs and other insects are scarce
As I have mentioned before, my balcony is in deep shade in the morning and that is when Will is most likely to appear. It is always so delightful to see his adorable face, and watch his movements. This is another unforgettable experience.

The bird portraits are looking very nice
Will knows where to come for fine food and an admiring audience and I can see that he is taking full advantage of it. And what a splendid visitor he is, Sonjia. The best things in life really are free! Hugs and kisses - David
I am very envious of your visits from Will, Sonjia. It is a very long time since a woodpecker visited our garden. If one did, I am sure I would take just as many shots as you have done! I was interested to learn that you use orange juice in your food mix. I have never heard of this before, but will now do some research. I would also like to know what other ingredients are in your 'cake', please.
Best wishes, take good care - - - Richard
its the little things that make us happy. I smiled all the way through the photos. I can see why you love to watch for him. I would have snapped myself silly and have been known to take dozens of shots of one thing, thus the name MADsnapper. Will is beautiful
These shots are so beautiful. We have lots of woodpeckers here, but they are usually on the roofs or trees.
A beauty indeed. How wonderful you can watch him at your feeder!
Hello,
I would be happy if Will visited my yard. I just love all the wonderful closeups! Awesome series on your beautiful woodpecker! You are nice to keep the birds well fed! Take care, have a wonderful day!
Gratuluję pięknych fotografii . Cudowny ptak,
That is one gorgeous woodpecker!
What beautiful photos of the woodpecker.
Greetings Irma
You cannot have too many Woodpecker photos - they are always fun to see!
I didn't know that orange juice was good for the birds. good info.
The photos are adorable.
Dear Sonjia :)
Will is very handsome and beautiful! I love your photos, and they are lovely. I have so much to do in my garden at det moment, so I have not read your blog until now today. I have two similar woodpeckers here in my garden, and I love to see them every day.
Warm hugs my dear friend, and all the best to you!
Marit

Your photos of Will are amazing!
It's wonderful to see such a beautiful woodpecker visiting your balcony often.
Thanks for sharing the info about orange juice for birds.
Keep up the great work caring for them, Sonjia.
Dear Sonjia,
A beautiful selection of pictures of Will. What a character! I am going to buy a new bird table. I already have a bird bath but I had to throw away the old table because it was rusty.I am also going to buy a broad selection of bird seeds and peanuts.I may even take some photos!
Will is a handsome fellow and your photos are marvelous. I love that you name the birds -- I do too. They are our friends!
Thanks, also, for your very lovely comment on my blog about the film about the music camp for those with disabilities. I was so touched by it and was grateful you shared your family story.
Will is really a handsome woodpecker! The vitamin C-infused cake is good for him. And what a good idea it is to feed that to the birds -- I wish we'd known about that when we used to feed birds. We don't live where we can do that now and I do miss my feeders. Thank you for sharing yours.
...Sonjia, is Will a Great spotted woodpecker? I would be pleased to have Will visit me. Take care and have a wonderful weekend.
You took such amazing photos of this beautiful bird. It shows every detail and makes it really come alive for us! Hugs!
Will looks quite happy with his meal, Sonjia. Have a good week.
Will the woodpecker is adorable! Love that you're providing tasty treats to keep him healthy. The close-up photos are great!
Beautiful photos of the woodpecker. We also have them at our feeder, and enjoy seeing them.
I’m confused by what you say about birds and vitamin C, as most birds do not need to consume it; rather, it is produced in their liver. This is true of many non-human mammals as well. I think dietary vitamin C is needed only by a few tropical bird species: ones that eat a lot of fruit. Your seed cake is surely full of other needed nutrients for these birds, though.

Your friend Will is a fine looking woodpecker. He is lucky to have you helping him stay fed.
this IS an unforgettable experience!! i too take way too many pictures, some are the same but many are out of focus. i feel it best to click away and see what you get, sometimes, they are not as lovely as the ones you shared here!!
What a wonderful visit you have this morning... it's wonderful that you pulled out the camera. I enjoyed every photo.
The great spotted woodpecker only comes to my feeder when there is snow in the forest. And I tell you, I really enjoy watching him too.
This year we have the black woodpecker in the forest again, when the trees had no leaves it was always easy to find, now it is difficult to watch the birds in the wonderful soft green that the trees now have...
it is an enjoyable walk in the forest.
A hug for you.
Thank you for your beautiful photos.
Viola
Nice series of the woodpecker. Thanks for sharing with all of us. Be well!
Me encantaría ver un pájaro carpintero en mi jardín, pero de momento me conformo con tus fotografías, son preciosas. Un abrazo.
Sonjia,
It sounds like a truly delightful encounter with Will on your balcony! Capturing such a moment with your camera, despite the photos being similar, only underscores your excitement and appreciation for this special visit. It's wonderful that you’ve found a way to connect with nature right from your own space, creating an environment where Will, along with the birds and squirrels, can come and enjoy a treat.
Using orange juice in the cake is a thoughtful touch, especially considering its health benefits for your feathered and furry visitors during the tougher months. It’s fascinating how small details, like the type of food you offer, can make a significant impact on local wildlife.
The image of Will enjoying his meal in the serene, shaded ambiance of your balcony during the morning hours paints a peaceful picture. These moments not only bring joy to you but also to those who read about them and view your photos. Keep sharing these experiences; they’re a lovely reminder of the simple pleasures life has to offer and the beauty of nature that can be found just outside our windows.
John

How exciting for you. Very nice photos of a beautiful woodpecker. I watched a red-bellied woodpecker at my feeder today chasing the grackles away, so it could eat alone. Quite impressive. Thank you always for your encouraging comments. It makes my day just looking at these beautiful photos of yours.
Querida Sonjia disfruté con estas hermosas imágenes. Es un ave muy muy bonita. Besos y un placer leerte de nuevo.
A wonderful series of photographs you've shared.
