Caterpillar Quandary for Good Fences.

Our Balcony where I found the caterpillar on a potted fern.

I took off a frond to better photograph them.

A closer look at the design. This caterpillar will eventually become a moth.

The moth is a Callopistria Latreillei,  Latriell's Latin Moth. I took my fill of photographs, and...

a view from the balcony.

When it moved underneath to munch away at the tender leaves. I turned the frond upside down.

I eventually relocated it to some other ferns in a sheltered spot, but not on my balcony or garden.

Our back fence covered in Sta Teresa Roses.

A view of our front driveway with the Azáleas in full bloom.
There are thousands of European caterpillars, and I have seen several hundreds of images to look for an ID, but none of them look like this one. I'm hoping that someone might recognize it! My thanks to fellow blogger and good friend Nick Morgan fom Butterfly Pictures, for finding the ID of this pretty caterpiller. The name is Callopistria latreillei Latrielles Latin Moth. Thank you again Nick!:)

Hi Sonjia.I didn't have a clue, so I have been surfing the internet and came up with the Florida Fern Caterpillar. This shouldn't occur in Europe, but googling its lating name came up with the related Callopistria latreillei, which looks like a good match. Its common name seems to be Latrielle's Latin Moth, and I am afraid the caterpillar is more colourful than the moth. Wikipedia confirms that this caterpillar feeds on ferns.

Lovely scenes and superb portraits of the caterpillars, but I'm sorry, I don't know what they are, but they sure are beauties.

i raised a black swallowtail last year, then set it free when it became a butterfly. it looked very similar to this. i did a lot of research on bringing them inside, to let them cocoon, everything i read supported it. i read that only 3% survive in the wild. i found mine on a dill plant, and fed it that until it cocooned. i will look for the blog post i did on it, if i find it i will send it to you!!!!

your balcony is gorgeous, i am a tad jealous!!!!

DEfinitely a quandary -- knowing we need to save the butterflys but not wanting our gardens destroyed. Even the volunteers at the Butterfly Garden where I walk say the same thing.
