Our Balcony where I found the caterpillar on a potted fern. |
I took off a frond to better photograph them. |
A closer look at the design. This caterpillar will eventually become a moth. |
The moth is a Callopistria Latreillei, Latriell's Latin Moth. I took my fill of photographs, and... |
a view from the balcony. |
When it moved underneath to munch away at the tender leaves. I turned the frond upside down. |
I eventually relocated it to some other ferns in a sheltered spot, but not on my balcony or garden. |
Our back fence covered in Sta Teresa Roses. |
A view of our front driveway with the Azáleas in full bloom. |

Those caterpillars have pretty patterns on them. I am sure they will turn into beautiful butterflies.
Hi. Beautiful flowers. Do you know what the caterpillar is in question.
Your balcony is beautiful.....and the view is wonderful!
I look forward to azalea time here.....
Brilliant series of floral design. What is the caterpillars name?
Beautifully flowered have a balcony. View from him too wonderful, green. Well, that you took from the balcony tracks. Regards.
wow, your balcony is just gorgeous! and your view is amazing, too!
Hi Sonjia.I didn't have a clue, so I have been surfing the internet and came up with the Florida Fern Caterpillar. This shouldn't occur in Europe, but googling its lating name came up with the related Callopistria latreillei, which looks like a good match. Its common name seems to be Latrielle's Latin Moth, and I am afraid the caterpillar is more colourful than the moth. Wikipedia confirms that this caterpillar feeds on ferns.
wow, you really have a gorgeous balcony, and a caterpillar too :)
Great close ups of that caterpillar!
Esta todo maravilloso. Un beso.
I don't know what kind it is, but it sure is a pretty one! Your balcony is lovely too.
nice caterpillar
You have a beautiful yard, patio and view.
Lovely scenes and superb portraits of the caterpillars, but I'm sorry, I don't know what they are, but they sure are beauties.
Nothing can match the brilliance and vibrancy of flowers and tree... Your snaps are awesome!
i raised a black swallowtail last year, then set it free when it became a butterfly. it looked very similar to this. i did a lot of research on bringing them inside, to let them cocoon, everything i read supported it. i read that only 3% survive in the wild. i found mine on a dill plant, and fed it that until it cocooned. i will look for the blog post i did on it, if i find it i will send it to you!!!!
your balcony is gorgeous, i am a tad jealous!!!!
Wow, wonderful balcony and I really love the mix of trees and plants in your last image. So very beautiful colours The catepillars are so nice.
Up here we still have snow and ice but I´ve started to wait for the swans.

The power of caterpillar cannot be underestimated.
And its beauty is always magnificent.
I've been a way for a while but I am pleased to be back. Fantastic post Breathaking. Gives me a summerfeeling.
Have a wonderful weekend.
DEfinitely a quandary -- knowing we need to save the butterflys but not wanting our gardens destroyed. Even the volunteers at the Butterfly Garden where I walk say the same thing.
The macros of the catepillars are gorgeous! Love your view, gorgeous flowers.
