At last a Butterfly, and a Gate for Good Fences.

The Comma Nymphalis c-album (Nymphalidae)

The sombre underwings are marked with a white comma.like shape.

It's one of the most distinctive European butterflies because of the colour and shape of it's wings.

It's ragged margins are easily recognizable even in silhouette.  Here are a few of last summers sightings.

Flight period is from March -September, in two broods.

It is widespread and common, and I love to see it in my garden.

Last but not least a gate for Thereas meme Good Fences, with these lovely Trumpet flowers.

GOOD FENCES

Hello and thank you for sharing your wonderful close up photos of this beautiful butterfly! The colours are just gorgeous!
That is a lovely old gate to find and it looks like it might be hidden soon under the huge spread of the creeper and its blooms!
Enjoy your day!

It's just too early (and cold) for butterflies where I live but it's warming up soon when I hope to see the Comma and others.

I love this flower, Buddliea, I think. I once brought a cutting back from Ireland but alas it didn't take.

Beautiful Butterfly. It's interesting that the underside of it's wings look like a dried up leaf. Great camouflage & that's a beautiful fence & gate with the Trumpet Flowers over it.

We have several species of comma here in North America and they look quite similar to the one you portray.
