SQUIRRELS

I'm on my second tub of mealworms but the only birds that eat them are the Coal-tits. The strange thing is that on the tub lable there is a picture of the creatures that do eat them, fish, lizards, hedgehogs, squirrels, mice, turtles, tortoise. and what looks like a parrot, and an exotic bird, but "my birds" such as the Great-tit and the robin ignore them to my disapointment, because I know how benificial the meal worms would be to their diet. The squirrels devour them, they can't get enough of this high protein food. Here are a few  different squirrels taken on different days when they arrive on my balcony they head streight for the mealworms, and then the peanuts.

Saw me here. :)

There are some amazing photographs you have taken of the squirrels. The squirrels are so beautiful.
Mealworms are a popular food here too.

I love its little claws!
I found the same thing here. The birds weren't much interested.

Hello dear Sonjia,
What amazing photos of the squirrels.
I love squirrels, I can only photograph them when we are on vacation, unfortunately, they don't occur where I live.
I wish you a wonderful weekend.
All the best, Irma

Every time I have fed the birds mealworms, Sonjia, the squirrels have eaten most of them. Their appetite is insatiable it seems. I hadn’t realized the birds were quite so selective. Here, whenever they can dart in between the squirrels, there seems to be no species immune to the juicy protein on offer. Sometimes a few crows will come down and they can muscle in among the squirrels quite successfully. Their sharp, strong bills can deliver a punishing blow and the squirrels know that. Such drama going on outside the window! Hugs and kisses - David

Wonderful and heartwarming! Thank you so much Sonjia. I love these photos of your dear little squirrel. My visiting birds seem to be down this year. I have tried several kinds of birdseed advertised for many of those birds. Our year-round ones don't visit but there's always the squirrel :)

I used to feed live mealworms to the bluebirds in my yard.
They loved them, many other birds and the squirrels would not eat them. I love your cute squirrels, they ear tufts are adorable. Great collection of photos. Thank you for linking up and sharing your post. Take care, have a great weekend. PS, thank you for leaving me a comment.

Your squirrels are so cute, with those little tufts on their ears -- different from the ones we see. Just like our squirrels in personality though, I can tell from your words and pictures! ... I have a picture that I love of a chickadee with a mealwork in its mouth.. I think our chickadee is very like your coaltit! A close relative if not the same bird with a different name.

The Blackbirds and Robins here enjoy the mealworms, but they only feed off the ground, so I have to throw them down for them. Your squirrel pictures are amazing.

I have never seen squirrels that look like yours with those wonderful hairy ears! They remind me of a punk musician! I expect to see a rock band with them -- maybe called The Meal Worms!

Beautiful pictures of the Red Squirrels, Sonjia. We have both Grey and Red Squirrels here. The native Red Squirrels are so much nicer than the Greys. Sadly the Greys bully the Reds and carry a disease, which they survive, but the Reds don't. It is such a shame that Grey Squirrels were introduced into the UK.

I never get over how amazingly adorable the squirrels visiting your balcony look. I'm sure the squirrels are loving you. This winter, since my neighbor cut down all their nut bearing trees, I have provided mine with some black walnuts, pecans and hazel nuts. Black walnuts are the best at keeping their teeth filed down, but I'm hoping I won't start finding their seedlings sprouting up all over the place. That was always a headache in years past. Wishing you many happy days to come.

What delightful visitors you have!
The squirrels look so cheeky, and you’ve captured their personalities beautifully.
Even if the robins and great-tits aren’t tempted, the squirrels clearly appreciate your generosity.
Lovely photos, Sonjia-- they brought a smile to my morning!

Dear Sonjia,
your squirrel photos are adorable!
I didn't know that squirrels also like to eat mealworms (which is partly because squirrels don't come into the gardens here in our housing estate...). I know about hedgehogs because our friends (from the next estate) have many hedgehog visitors in their garden and feed them. And OF COURSE I know about the various garden birds – tits, sparrows, and recently, more often, robins also come to our feeders with sunflower seeds, other grains, AND an extra portion of mealworms. And the blackbirds peck up what the other birds have dropped. It's really quite ignorant of the mealworm vendors not to show any native birds on the tub label...
Hugs & all the best from Austria,
Traude
