THE ESTUARY Part Three

Continuing the third part of my day spent at the estuary with my daughter Eva I will be sharing just a few bird photos, and some more images of the local atmosphere, on and off the water. It was a fantastic day out. My snaps are of a poor quality, but I hope you enjoy sharing in the atmosphere of that sunny day. By the time I took these photos, I felt very tired as the walk to the estuary had been a long walk, and I was already on my way back to the car,  soaking up the atmosphere of everything I saw as I went along.

Herring Gull

 A few Rock Pigeons / Doves

I have read that the Pigeon is one of the most intelligent animals on this planet, although we often think of them as being just a nuisance

A beautiful bird.

More water sport images. I have left the birds in on purpose,

on every photo. :=)

A relaxed atmosphere, as people were enjoying finishing their lunch.

It was just like a summer's day, when eating outside is so pleasurable

Chilling out with the family.

A Yellow-legged Gull near the restaurants.

Lots of activity, without the promenade ever feeling crowded.

 Egyptian Geese.

The beautiful bronze statue on the esplanade by the Rio Douro is by the artist Irene Vilar 1930-2001. It is called "The Messenger" and is the Angel Gabriel, although it is usually referred to as "The Angel".

Dear Sonjia,

I like to see the pictures from your local area. The birds, the water and the light looks very nice. The Doves are very pretty.

I accidentally deleted your last comment on my blog. I don't know how it happened, but I'm so sorry about it.

Many hugs from Norway.

That looks like a lovely day Sonjia. I particularly like the Egyptian Geese. Do you think that all of the water sport and other activity is disturbing the birds? We have seen an enormous increase in water sports and visits to the coast since lockdown. I think this is having a big impact on the wildlife there.

Hello Sonjia,

My word you take great pictures, Sonjia, so crisp and sharp and clear. I am very pleased to see that in keeping with your new status as birder extraordinaire you have aimed your lens at some fine avian subjects. Soon you will have a gallery of gulls, a cornucopia of cormorants, a tableau of tits, a selection of sparrows, and who knows what else! In the meantime both your balcony and the estuary will bring pleasure to all of us via your wonderful images. I am a happy man! Big hugs - David

Hello Sonjia. The Douro looks so inviting and relaxing, something for everyone I think. I know The Douro from the fact that I look, sometimes in vain, for Portuguese wines because experience has taught me that they are very often far superior to their French and Spanish counterparts. It's not an easy task in our supermarkets but I am invariably pleased with the goodies I find. Cheers, and enjoy your time on the river.

I love the way that you have captured the fabulous irridescence in the plumage of the doves, Sonjia. It seems that Egyptian Geese are getting firmly established all over Europe. They give us a problem with Osprey nests as Egyptian Geese like to nest up high, and have a habit of taking over Osprey Nests before the Ospreys return in the spring. Most times the Ospreys will see them off, however.

Seeing all those people having fun on the water in this post from you has got me wondering if I am too old to take up paddle-boarding. I might, however, be a bit put-off by the water temperature!

Thank you for an entertaining and thought-provoking post. Stay safe - - - Richard

So great to see the rock pigeons in a natural surrounding instead of in the city!

Hello, Sonjia :=)
Today, October 27, is my first visit since October 14, when I enjoyed Part 1 of your visit to the estuary. I’ve now enjoyed Parts 2 and 3. In Part 2, I smiled, when you said, about your first sighting of a Godwit, “I am beginning to think of myself as a birder, so I saw a lifer!!:=)” That is so cool. I think of myself as a sort of “wanna-be” birder. For one thing, I don’t really have a “life list” that I can refer to, and also, I’m getting so old that I’m not sure if I can recall seeing an unusual bird 40 or 50 years ago. 😊 Looking back, I should have started a written list. I enjoyed your photos of the Godwit. Also, the people enjoying their sailboats. In Part 3 I felt like I was there with you enjoying the atmosphere of the sunny day. There was so much fun activity and yet no sense of being crowded. Thank you for sharing your visit to the estuary. Sending you best wishes from Seattle. Have a fine weekend ahead!
John
