THE GREEN WOODPECKER Picus viridis

Hello Again! Well, I hadn't expected to be away for two months,  my ribs were slow in healing, and even now can cause pain in certain positions, but I feel well enough to start blogging again, and sharing a few of my latest captures. It seems incredible that the Green Woodpecker has always eluded me for at least fifty years. Paula sees them sometimes in a tree covered area near her home. Whenever she told me she had seen one, I felt as green as the Woodpecker,:=) but to my absolute delight I saw one yesterday morning,  but quite far away, so these images are the best of a bad bunch, but I don't mind, because I have been hearing the loud calling noise it makes for a couple of months, and it is near my home, but I didn't trust myself to try to find it, on a tree covered slope whilst my ribs were still healing. Many many thanks to those of you who made a caring comment to get well soon. It has not been an easy fix, it takes time, but seeing as it could have been much worse, I am most grateful it wasn't, and also so happy to be back.

Hello again :)
So nice that you are feeling better! I have thought of you many times.
Lovey photos of the green woodpecker. It's very special with the green color.

Take care, and enjoy the summertime!

What beautiful photos of the green woodpecker.
You don't see this species often, certainly not in the Netherlands, you sometimes hear the laughter of the woodpecker.

Good to hear that the pain is gone, so much pain is driving you crazy.
I have a frozen shoulder and have been in very bad pain for 7 months, no painkiller even oxicodone didn't work, now I'm in the second phase, the pain is less but the movement is not yet complete, I hope this phase lasts shorter than the first phase, then you still have phase three, then the pain is gone and you should be able to get the movement in the shoulder again, this can all take between two and three years.
Because I fell on my shoulder blade on February 13, 2021, I have been walking with pain all this time.
Sometimes I only slept two hours a night, luckily it's a lot better now.
Greetings Irma

Welcome back, Sonjia. I am glad that you have recovered to the point where you are comfortable at the computer again, and can bring us up to date with all that is happening in your world. A Green Woodpecker is a wonderful way to do it! It is a spectacular bird and after so many years without seeing one it must have been a special thrill for you. Take good care of yourself and keep getting stronger. Hugs from Ontario - David

Today I found your blog and I was delighted. I also love to photograph, unfortunately I don't have a good camera, but I capture everything I see and like through my cell phone.
Your photos of the beautiful Green woodpecker are so fantastic.
I wish your speedy recovery.

I'm glad your feeling better. I can empathize with you, as I once fell on my back and jarred my sternum so badly, I was in horrible pain for months. What a beautiful woodpecker... more like olive green. I'm glad your dream came true of finally seeing one.

So good to see this blog post from you.
It so often takes longer than we think to recover from an injury, so do continue to take things at a slower pace and feel 100% soon.

Lovely photographs you've shared, a delight to see.

Enjoy this last day of June and my good wishes for the new month of July.

All the best Jan

I am behind on blog reading, sorry to read about your fall and hope you are recovering well. Your green woodpecker pictures are really spectacular, I have never seen the detail on them before, we get them in the woods but always at a distance. Thanks for sharing.

It's good to see you back and to hear that you are doing well despite the pain. I, too, was sick for the past week and only started blogging yesterday. Great capture of the green woodpecker; clarity is secondary when we can spot and photograph the bird. Be glad to see it from a long way back.
Take care and have a nice weekend

I'm delighted to see you back in Bloggerland Sonjia and so pleased to learn that you are recovering from your accident.

I can't remember the last time that I saw a Green Woodpecker - I suspect that it was a couple of years ago or more - but I do sometimes hear them. They used to be far more common a few years ago. Thank you for showing us your beautiful images of this youngster as a reminder of better times.

Take good care - - - Richard

Good to see you back Sonjia. I hope you are truly on the mend. I too have not seen a Green Woodpecker for years because they are now extremely scarce, even rare in Lancashire NW England. I'm really jealous!

...what a lovely little thing, it's so different than the woodpickers we see. There are so many dead and dying ash trees here that the sound of woodpeckers is common. Take care and enjoy your weekend.

Hello Sonija! I missed your April 29 post due to my extended break and I’m so sorry to hear about your fall and injuring your back. I’m so happy to hear that you are improving now and getting back into your walks with your camera. By the way, your rose photos in the April 29 post are just wonderful! Wow. Getting on now to this post, June 29, I can only say I disagree with one thing you said … you mentioned a “bad batch” of photos, but they sure look good to me! 😊 I have never before seen a Green Woodpecker (Picus viridis) so your photos are a learning experience for me. Thank you, thank you! Nature never ceases to amaze me with birds like this Green Woodpecker. Thank you for sharing your photos and thank you for your wonderful comments on my blog. I so appreciate thoughtful comments like the ones you leave for me. Best wishes on continuing your recovery. We need to get you back out with your camera as soon as possible! 😊 Best regards from Seattle! John

Wow. I've never seen one of those - we don't have woodpeckers so I'm amazed at how many varieties and colours they are! #Idratherbebirdin

I've very happy to hear your good report that you are healing and starting to improve. It takes a long time to heal. Love this special woodpecker. I'll probably never get to see one so I really appreciate the photos!

Hi Sonjia,
I am so pleased that you feel well enough to blog again and to get out in search or Green Woodpeckers!!
I was really excited to hear one here this spring, but it must have moved on, as I haven't heard it for a couple of months now.
We also had a Great Spotted Woodpecker with a next in an old tree. Unfortunately the fledging of its young coincided with us going on holiday for two weeks, so I didn't get to see the chicks. Interestingly there is no sign of adults or young at the moment.

I am happy to hear you are feeling better. Ribs are slow healers as I remember from my father's experience many, many years ago. Continued speedy healing to you and thank you for sharing these lovely photos.
