SPARROW HAWK at DUSK

As I was just about to close my bedroom shutters for the night, I saw a Sparrow Hawk perched on a nearby tree with a strange looking talon. The talon was outstretched in an awkward position. It was very obvious that one of it's talons was badly deformed. I don't know how this would have affected it's hunting. The images are not great, as the light was fading, but take a look and tell me what you think.

Dear Sonjia,

You have taken very beautiful photos of the Sparrow Hawk. I have seen this bird here too, and it's chasing "my" little birds in the garden. That's the way nature is. The Hawk looks like it has only one leg, but the it seems ok to me. Great bird!

Hugs from Norway.

Hello Sonjia: I have never seen a bird with a condition even faintly resembling this. The bird looks very healthy, and appears to be well fed, so I can only assume that its hunting skills have not been seriously affected. It certainly has a bizarre appearance, however, and you were very observant to notice the bird and to get some pictures to share with us. Hugs from Ontario, David

I think it'd survive. We should go with that, poor thing.

Your sparrows look different from ours, which are very small. He's quite handsome.

The legs do look strange.
However, this sparrow hawk can survive.

It looks strange. But would it be a question of visual illusion.

You asked in your comment on my my blog if (regarding to my comment here) sparrow hawks were different in the U.S. I happened to miss that you said "hawk" in your title and I was thinking of not the hawks but the small sparrows in our yard! So, oops! I'll read more carefully next time!

That's interesting, Sonjia. As a Sparrowhawk's talons are usually black, I'm wondering if it's something else - maybe something that has got snagged on its foot?

Take good care - Best wishes - - - Richard

That's a new one on me Sonjia. I guess like all animals, birds can develop illnesses or diseases. In the case of birds have a read of below and a search of the Internet where you may find something very specific to raptors and their killing method of using their talons.

The leg really looks strange though the bird itself looks very healthy and strong.

Beautiful images Sonjia, the trouble with it is something stuck in its talons?

a beautiful bird. Seems to be OK to me :)

I think the yellow 'thing' sticking up is not part of the birds foot but a shoot from a tree or something caught in his foot, maybe that he has been feeding on and still holding on to. He looks pretty healthy, if he had a dodgy foot he would have been attacked by other birds - he is beautiful, you were lucky to get such a good close up.

A beautiful bird!
Unfortunately I can not see exactly, but yes, it IS possible that it is a deformed tallon. Would be really interesting if it hinders the bird - maybe it also developed a method to impale its prey with it? Who knows! It certainly looks like it has managed to grow up...

Really sad what you wrote me about the turtle with it's head inside a plastic water bottle. Was the animal already dead or were you able to save it? I also always get very aggressive when I see things that have anything to do with pollution. About 30 years ago, while I was pregnant and on vacation with the father of my child in Greece, I saw a young man (I think he was a British tourist) in front of me throwing an aluminum can into the sea. I yelled at the guy like a fury for destroying OUR world, including my child's, and that the earth is our mother that we must protect. He treated me like I was crazy and my partner at the time (who became my ex-paertner shortly after) was just embarrassed that I had freaked out... I would do the same thing again today, probably MUCH angrier.
I had to laugh at your dog story - yes, they like to roll in dung and carrion ;-DDD Aren't there any dog shampoos WITHOUT a smell?
All the best and hugs from Austria,
Traude

I'm sure the damaged talon would cause problems for birds of prey, who rely on their claws to hunt. Despite the low light, the Sparrow Hawk is lovely, and you captured it nicely.
Have a great week.
