Penguins at the Santo Inacio Zoo

Another favourite of ours were the Penguins, such adorable lively creatures. This will be my last post of photos taken at the Santo Inacio Zoo.

The African Penguin   Spheniscus demerus

They grow to a height of 60cm ( 2ft tall )

They are accustomed to living in warmer climates,...

but went in and out of the water all the time to cool off.

and loving it, as it was a really hot day.

This friendly one came right up to us.

Penguins spend several hrs a day preening their feathers to keep them well maintained, or they would not stay waterproof.

For extra protection, penguins spread oil on their feathers. The oil comes from a special gland, near their tail. The penguins tail is short and wedge shaped which helps it to maintain stability on land.

Both sexes look the same.

Many were banded on their flippers.

A close up of the friendly one.

A gate we saw near the zoo, which I have added for Good Fences.

What curious birds! The penguins at Edinburgh Zoo go for a parade around the zoo each day. It was a highlight whenever I visited the zoo when I was young.

We enjoyed seeing lots of penguins at Seaworld this year. The exhibit was so cold though!

Hello Sonjia. Hope you are well. I often see penguins portrayed on TV as rather comical characters with presenters making jokes about the birds' behaviour. And then I see a wildlife programme that features penguins where I can but marvel at their hunting and feeding ability underwater. of course they are (mostly) a hugely successful and numerous family of birds as we know. Lovely pictures; I would like to see penguins in the wild - as long as it isn't somewhere too cold.

I wish we could do away with zoos. It's just time, what with internet footage.

I have been fortunate to see five species of penguin in the wild. Sadly, all species of penguin are now in trouble, for various reason, not the least of which is climate change. What would a world be like without these delightful creatures? I hate to even contemplate the possibility, but certain species are in quite dire straits.

Nice looking penguins. We get 'Little Penguins' here but they only come into the open at night so they are hard to photograph.

Dearest Sonija; I've noticed that your Santo Inacio Zoo has many different critters than ours. I've never seen penguins :-) Such wonderful pictures of them♪ And intersecting to read the information about tails and the both sexes look the same. Great posts form the zoo, Dear friend, thank you SO much.

Sending Lots of Love and Hugs from Japan to my Dear friend in Portugal, xoxo Miyako*
