I had never noticed the subtle iridescence in the Lapwing's wing. Why, it looks like a "lap cover." I had to look up the origin of the name and it may relate to the way it drags its wing in a distraction display to lure predators (and people) away from its nest, as does our Killdeer. Another source of the name may be an ancient word to describe its erratic flight. (It's nice to learn something new every day and now I have two alternate lessons.)
Hi, I am your newest follower and found your blog thanks to your kind comment on mine. Wow, I am truly impressed with your photography! Your photos of the Lapwing are wonderful. And you have a most interesting profile. I too, love photography. I so agree with you about capturing photos of beauty, and, the very last part of your profile hits exactly on why I'm into blogging ... "... a thing of beauty is better when shared." Thank YOU for sharing!

The lapwing was always first harbinger of spring in our village. I could hear him, as child, through my bedroom window. My buddies and I were looking for eggs in the meadow in front of our house. I remember how the father of my friend one day baked a lapwing egg in the kitchen of their farm. That was in the seventies. Today, the egg hunt is prohibited. The lapwing is a protected bird.
