I had never noticed the subtle iridescence in the Lapwing's wing. Why, it looks like a "lap cover." I had to look up the origin of the name and it may relate to the way it drags its wing in a distraction display to lure predators (and people) away from its nest, as does our Killdeer. Another source of the name may be an ancient word to describe its erratic flight. (It's nice to learn something new every day and now I have two alternate lessons.)

The lapwing was always first harbinger of spring in our village. I could hear him, as child, through my bedroom window. My buddies and I were looking for eggs in the meadow in front of our house. I remember how the father of my friend one day baked a lapwing egg in the kitchen of their farm. That was in the seventies. Today, the egg hunt is prohibited. The lapwing is a protected bird.

In Portugal too?
