Fast Flyer Continued

The male Broad-bodied libelula    Libelula Depressa

The day after I saw the female Libellula depressa, a male appeared, and as the female was still there, quite soon after the conjoined pair mated in mid air. Although I tried without success to follow them around, it was too difficult to photograph the act.  I would not have thought it possible for them to mate whilst flying, ... but perhaps this is not as unusual as it seemed!!

The male waited around for a few days, but the female left as soon as the sexual act was consumated, and did not return.

"Still waiting"

As they are around from May to August, there is still a chance I'll see more of these small dragonflies this year, ...hope so!.

In my excitement about seeing the Hoopoe, I forgot about posting this follow-up to the female Libellula depressa, so here it is.

Great catch and beautiful photos!
They are gorgeous dragons with this wide flat abdomen!
One can see that this male has been mating a few times from the scratches left by the female's claws on it and the wings are pristine. He is half way through his short aerial life!
Enjoy your evening!

How do you differentiate the male from the female.

Their public performance of aerial kamasutra was probably to taunt humans!

Super images of the male BBC. And yes .... many of the Odonata species 'do it' in flight!

Wonderful photographs of "Libelula Depressa"♡♡♡ My husband mentioned this dragonfly's name in Japanese and tried to identify if it is the same one he knows. When I opened the picture page, he said the same family but I thought it quite different p;)

Let me add that I respect you the way you shifted your interest in the different art field. Your pictures are fantastic♡♡♡
Wishing you will have a wonderful week ahead.

Sending you Lots of Love and Hugs from Japan, xoxo Miyako*

Terrific images. I love watching them fly...their gossamer wings sparkling as the sunlight hits it just right....and for the fact they EAT mosquitoes.

Hi,Sonjia!

A patient and persistent male libellula this one is, who doesn´t seem to give up easily...

And your photos are just great, and his wings a work of art.

Have a good week.

With a hug.

These are wonderful shots! The red background really sets off the dragonfly. We had so many around us on the 4th...landing on our heads, hats, arms, etc. I like to think of them as good luck!
