The fishermen were hauling in their nets on the quay in Ferragudo, which attracted the many Cormorants waiting for scraps on nearby boats. Some Cormorants began to swim with the gulls, in the direction of the larger fishing boats, as I managed to get these shots. I saw quite a number of them whilst on holiday, both by the shore, and in the wetlands, but this was the nearest I came to seeing how long in the body they really are at close range..
we have them here but ours are not nearly as pretty as yours are, i do love that face that a mother would love... excellent photos of these fisherman waitng for there food.
They really are big birds aren't they? Have you noticed how they dry their feathers by spreading their wings? Last year, a guide at my favorite nature walk here in Florida told me that they don't have oil in their feathers the way ducks do, so they have to get out of the water to dry off. I found that so interesting!
Great shots. I find cormorants eternally interesting and they are at times opportunistic feeders, but mostly they exhibit considerable skill in taking fish in underwater pursuits. Their success rate is extremely high.
excellent images!! i love the cormorants blue eyes!! and for as many times as i have seen and photographed them, i have never noticed their round tails!!
You got such sharp photos of the cormorants. We have them here and they are fun to watch. Usually when I get focused on one, they go under water! lol Hugs!
When you look at these beautiful portraits and see all their colours, green eyes, yellow face, shimmer of browns and blacks, I am reminded I should look twice at many things.
Hello once again! Glad to see you back & with brilliant pictures of the cormorant, a bird which I have only seen from afar! It really does have an emerald green eye & a sharp hook beak! Hope you are having a great week! Christine
Wow...amazing [beautiful, sharp, and clear] images of the gull and the cormorants!! Don't you just love the water aerobic abilities? AND their turquoise eyes!!
Hi Sonjia. I rather like Cormorants but over here they are very difficult to photograph because they are persecuted by the angling and fishing fraternity. I think your photos are so rather nice.
Yes, it may seem strange about our House Sparrow but those are the relative fortunes of a very declining species as opposed to a really successful and increasing species like the Goldfinch.
you by now KNOW I love your cormorant photos...they're awesome!! And, I want to convey my thanks to you for sharing this post with all of us birders from I'd Rather B Birdin' this week!!!

You even showed the green of the eye!
They are cool birds.
Can't say which are neater, cormorants or anhingas ... but love how both of them dry their wings.
Top model of the year. Awesome photos.
Topmodel material. Superb photos.
Greetings.

Lovely. We have a few cormorants here just now on the river. I think that they have come inland during the cold weather we are experiencing just now.
Beautiful pictures you made to the cormorants. They are interesting birds and they like eating fish and lots of it. Regards.

I see a few Cormorants here, but they are usually too far away to get good photos. Your photos are excellent!
Such interesting and pretty birds. Not sure that I've ever seen those birds in this area. Really enjoyed your wonderful photos.
