Two Hoopoes

This is the follow up post to the Hoopoe post. As we were about to call it a day, another Hoopoe flew to the side of the one I had been photographing.

NOW THAT THERE WERE TWO HOOPOES, WE HAD TO FALL BACK A BIT.

IT WAS MORE DIFFICULT TO FOCUS ON TWO HOOPOES ON THE MOVE.

HERE, YOU CAN JUST MAKE OUT, THAT ONE HOOPOE HAS SOMETHING IN IT'S BEAK.

WHICH IS OFFERED TO THE OTHER.

THEIR CONSTANT HEAD BOBBING AND CHANGE OF DIRECTION, WAS CHALLENGING.

MORE OF THE SAME,.....JUST SCROLL DOWN QUICKLY!!

SORRY GUYS, BUT YOU ARE NOT DOING ANYTHING, VERY INTERESTING.:)

AH! HERE YOU ARE SYNCHRONIZED!

I'M SHOWING ALL THE PHOTOS I TOOK, BUT THEY ARE NEARLY FINISHED NOW, SO BEAR WITH ME!

ANOTHER FIND, PROBABLY A CATERPILLAR.

I'M NOT SURE IF I WAS PHOTOGRAPHING A PAIR OF HOOPOES, M and F, OR A FEMALE WITH HER OFFSPRING.

OFF THEY WENT UP THE ROAD.

AND WE FINALLY CALLED IT A DAY, A VERY GOOD DAY.:)

to me these birds are odd and oh so beautiful. I love the pointed head feathers and the stripes and the colors and the fact they share with each other.

These are much sought after rarities in Japan!

These are so cute <3 Google told that hoopoe has nested (?) in Finland only once: in 1940!

Whatever challenges you had photographing these birds you overcame them and succeeded in getting a great series of pictures of a very enigmatic bird. Great job!!

I'm inclined to think one is a youngster Bob, rather than a male and female pair.

Wishing I could see these in the wild....heck, even in a zoo or a pet store [not that I'd want them caged] would be thrilling to me!

GREAT photos Ms S.

Such an incredible bird. Hoopoe is the national bird of Israel and it is called Dukhifat.

Very sweet to check how they exchange their find... lovely series following the single, whether they are a pair or siblings it should be interesting to watch their activity.

Happy weekend :)

A very good day indeed -- many thanks for sharing it with us! Those are the most remarkable birds. A funny thing happened the other night: we were watching a BBC mystery show and there were birdwatchers involved in it who were excited because they had seen a hoopoe ... they were looking at pictures of it and (horrors) a stuffed one .... I yelled out "I have a blog friend who has actually seen those birds!"..... my husband said he would have thought the writers of the show made that bird up .... after the show I came and looked up your earlier post to show him that it was for real!!

Phil Slade said...

That was quite a challenge Sonjia. Hoopoes are deceptively quick in their movements as you point out. I think your pictures are brilliant, most of all in keeping the two in focus - not at all easy. Did you think that one was feeding the other at some point? If so than maybe you found an adult and a still partly dependent youngster?

Amazing images of the Hoopoes. Such remarkable looking birds. They didn't seem to notice your presence.
Have a wonderful weekend :)

Wow amazing set of photos. Love the markings on the hoopoes.

Gordon said...

Oh my goodness those photos are awsome, what ever one bird is passing to the other must be some kind of mating ritual, is it food or just a token?
Hve a good week, Gordon.
