Green Gate with Granary

Always on the look-out for something for Good Fences, I was very pleased to come across a gate with an Espigueiro on top, which is a very unusual sight, as they are usually built from the ground up on four blocks of granite. Espigeiros are little granaries made of wood and granite of ancient contruction.
They are narrow rectangular structures used for drying and storing corn, and they dot the country-side of northern Portugal. Some date back to the eighteenth century and have crosses on top to bless and protect the corn. Perhaps not the best exemple of an Espigeiro but an unexspected and interesting find nevertheless.

To carry on with the G theme here are a few juvanile greenfinches seen on the same outing.

One more look at the green gate with Espigeiro seen from the road.

Bonjour,

Très jolies photos. Je suppose que ces petits verdiers viennent se régaler des grains de maïs peut-être un peu gros pour eux !!

Gros bisous ♡

I like those greenfinch shots. Sometimes I find Pied wags to be confiding, other times not,but I always use a 400mm lens.

That little Green Finch is so cute sitting there on the barbed wire fencing.
Oh my that Green gate, rock wall and the Espigeiro are just so cool. I've never heard of this until today so it was very interesting to read about it and to actually see one. Great find.

I love that gate with the granary over it. A clever use of space and very practical, as well as looking lovely.
I would never have recognised the juvenile Greenfinches. They would have had me searching through my bird books for hours!!

Do you think that the grain store may have been built above the gate as an economical way to use stone?

So nice to sees you here!:) The Espigeiro's are made mostly of stone, and local granite is plentiful in this área. I'm not sure why this one is above the gate, could have been to save space, although from outside the property looks quite large. Twill remain a mystery!
