Algarve and the Bee Eater 2017

Hello Everyone!:) It's a pleasure to be back home, ...where it is now lovely warm weather, and I'm feeling so much better. The break has done me good, and I have lots of goodies to share,...birds, butterflies insects, flowers, and so much more,... but the highlight of our holiday, without any doubt was meeting up with an old friend, and seeing  and photographing the many beautiful Bee Eaters. We knew where their nesting sights were this time, and went to look for them on the very next day, so this is where I'll begin. I hope you are all in the best of health, and I'm looking forward to visiting you all as soon as I can.

The Bee Eater  Merops apiaster

They catch insects in flight, often high up in the air.

The Bee Eaters plumage has very brilliant colours, though these are not especially luminous, therefore usually require a perched bird, and moderate range to be fully enjoyed.

We had parked the car, just off the main dirt road where their nests were, and I waited behind the trunk, before I finally got lucky and took a series of shots of not only one, but two Bee Eaters.

Fortunately they liked to perch out in plain sight, on fences, and on old lichen covered trees.

Those are just super Bee Eater pics. Of course we saw them every day in Menorca where they are rather shy. It's only be staying in a car close to a colony or overhead wires that I can get pictures. Didn't get any this year because of my broken 400mm! But I'm working on it.

I'm so pleased you are feeling btter now that the warm weather has arrived. it must be 25 degrees or more by now?

Delighted to hear you are feeling much better.

Super shots of the so colourful Bee-eater. I saw plenty in Greece but typically none sat still enough for a photo-call.

P.S. Your comment cam through ok on my recent post.

Lovely to see you in April. The birds I saw fleetingly, which I thought were bee-eaters, may not have been, because I do not recall seeing such brightly coloured plumage. As usual, you have waited for the moment and captured some wonderful images. I love your photography and wish I could have shared a photographing trip with you. Maybe one day?!

Hi Sonjia. So pleased to hear that the warmth of the Algarve has alleviated your problems - I hope that the benefits are lasting.

Your images of the Bee-eater are delightful. You've captured the amazing plumage of this fabulous bird perfectly, and I'm much impressed that you've even got one with its lunch in its bill!

I hope your days continue to be bright and warm, and I'm looking forward to seeing your Little Owl!

Great to hear from you again Sonjia. I love your pictures of the Bee Eaters. They remind me of my childhood in the Camargue. I have never been able to get close to them recently on our holidays to take photographs. I think a bit of local knowledge is needed!!

Hi Sonija. I guess I will have to wait until September to see Bee Eaters again. There should be one or two late migrants in Greece than.
