Black Redstart in the Rain.

The female Black Redstart is similar to the female Redstart, but slightly darker in colour. It's quite common in mountain districts, and I saw a pair on the farm in September. Ofcouse they have left now, but whilst they were here I had opportunity to photograph this female through the window of my studio. The glass got a bit steamed up, probably because I got a little excited at seeing them. The male was busy hunting and didn't stay long enough for me to get a good shot of him before he flew off again to find food. They made fast work of the Virginia creeper berries however, as did many birds in the area.

The bare stalks of the red berries form a lovely foil to frame this bird. Delightful images.

What a sweet little bird! You got so many wonderful photos through your window. The photos are so colorful!

Thank you for your well wishes --my eyes are coming along and hopefully soon I'll be using less eye drops. I feel very fortunate!

Hello Sonjia. My header of Black Redstart, a first autumn bird, was taken in Cyprus in the month of November.

Forgive me but I think your photos depict a Nightingale, unfortunately I am unable to see the back and tail of the bird to confirm the ID. I have no experience of Black Redstarts in Portugal but I would not expect them to eat berries as you describe as the species is insectivorous.

The Black Redstart of any age/sex does not show a white throat. The overall colour of your bird is a warm, plain brown. The bird also has a very black eye with an indistinct eye ring. It has the appearance of a juvenile bird which would fit with your September timing.

Regards
Phil

Hi Sonjia, Beautiful pictures. I refrained from commenting straight away because I wasn't sure. Having never seen a female black redstart I waited to see if there any other opinions and Phil Slade seems to have got it right. A beautiful bird and beautiful pictures.
Regards Mike.

Lovely shots of this cute little bird. She looks similar to some of the small birds we have around here. I can never tell them apart as they all look alike and they don't sit still for long enough.

The Redstart is so cute sitting amongst all that red!
