Algarve, and Rout of Snails En Route

One day in the country lanes of the Alvor Estuary, on our way to the marsh lands. Americo, drew my attention to clusters of tiny snails all along  the  fence. It was such an unusual sight that I immediately took some photos to share for Good Fences.

We saw two clusters of tiny dormant snails.

You will be better able to see the singular snails on the lower wire.

They were much smaller than my little fingernail.

A  rout.

They will feed many of the birds which inhabit the marshlands.

I expect that after summer is over, and the rain begins to fall, they will make their way down the posts to lay their eggs.

The larger snails had a pretty pattern on their shells.

A Monastery for Good Fences.

The Monastery of Roriz was founded in the late 11th century by Dom Toure Sernao. Later in the 12th Century (1173) the king of Portugal, Afonso Henriques, donated it to the friars of Santa Cruz of Coimbra, taking therefore the rule of Saint Augustine, and it was in fact these Canons that constructed the monastic church of Roriz, and their work extended throughout the 13th century.

The Monastery of Roriz

It is classified as a National Monument.

We only saw the exterior, but it was well worth a visit...

just to see the architecture...

and tread the stone paths that people had trodden all those centuries ago...

and see what they would have seen.

babies being babtized here...

and monks passing through this gate.

I don't know if there would have been daisy-like flowers growing between the stones!:)

But I know the monks made their own wine and vineyards are all around.

Gate Number Eight for Good Fences.

We visited my sister in-law's quinta, when our friends were here, and then just before leaving, I took these two shots of the gate.

The property is several hundred's of years old, and the extensive grounds inside are beautiful, but the gate is just for Good Fences.

A Sow for Good Fences

A huge sow was the focus of attention for these school children, who were on a supervised day out to the nature reserve on one of the days we visited. I think it is wonderful that schools provide this kind of education, and the pig seemed to enjoy the company

The Black Kite a Gate and Fence

Whilst our friends were here we visited a nature reserve with an extensive thirtyfive hectares of woodlands and farms, with rivers and ponds. We took the three kilometre long pathways, seeing many varieties of trees and plants. Along the way, wooden hides with benches to view the wildlife were numerous, as were the benches situated by the ponds and river, and I was thrilled to see so many wonderful species of birds, from raptors to water fowl, and wading birds to pheasants, however today, I would like to share the Black Kite.

Gate Number Seven

This will be my seventh quinta gate for Good Fences, not because I can't find other kinds of gates, but because I like to share all things traditional about Portugal. This entrance gate is of a farm, or large country estate, "that is really what quinta means," and they are found in Portugal and Spain.

The initials A and C are entwined at the top, which is unusual for a quinta gate.

I will be taking a break from blogging for a while, as friends of ours are staying with us next month. I'll be back some time in May.

A Mill House for Good Fences.

When the sun shines, the outdoors becken, and we call our jaunts adventures, which they are in a way, because we never know what we will discover on our travels. It doesn't  need to be anything in particular, although I'm always on the lookout for fences and gates, so I was kind of disapointed when I saw that the fence in front of this little mill house is hardly discernible in my photos, but I'm sharing them anyway for Good Fences

Two drive by shots of this little mill house.

Just Trees and Fences.

The gnarled tree I shared on my Nuthatch post was just one  of many misshapen trees in the park, so I had the idea of going back with the express purpose of photographing more, and just trees, because I saw some very interesting ones when we were there last. On our way there, the sky darkened and it began to look like rain. I had never seen the park in this light before, nor had it ever seemed so quiet. Where had all the birds gone, I wondered!

It did seem strange without hearing birdsong, but the trees had been my objective, and there would be another time for birds. I photographed this one first, it's also in the background in my third photo.

The twisted limbs and tangled branches take on an eerie, almost mystical appearance in this light.

This wonderful tree is rather special, with it's gnarled trunk and moss covered roots. Far from showing weakness, it's weather-beaten appearance shows it's strength as well as it's longivity.

The same tree, just from a slightly different position. It's strong and mighty ancient knobbled trunk and green gnarled roots, made me think of myths and legends, and it's perhaps my favourite tree in the park.

Gnarled trunks and roots, and bent and twisted limbs are in evidence everywhere in the park...

and moss and ivy covered trees, many of which look as though they have been blown over to one side.

The deeper one goes into the wooded areas the more ivy is apparent covering the  whole of the tree.

It's hard to believe how they lean and bend, and twist and corkskrew their way upwards and sideways, but although they show signs of distress, they are deeply rooted, and magnificently steadfast.

Many slender branches and twigs litter the ground but that is what I like about this natural environment.

they have been here for a very long time. This is a strange looking tree, being thicker in the middle than at the base of the trunk, and the branches also weirdly misshapen, rather like the tenticles of an octopus.

This scene for some reason captured my imagination and reminds me of a magical enchanted wood,

I am including the last two photos, but they were taken in a different park, where the trees grow straight and tall.

It's Good Fences again, where you can see gates, railings, and fences from different parts of the world and if you would like to participate, just click on the link.  My thanks to Theresa our gracious host for her Good Fences meme.

Veterinarian Visit for Good Fences.

On a visit to a nearby stable last year, we were just in time to see the Vet cleaning Prince's teeth. It's not the first time it's been done,  so Prince was fairly relaxed throughout the whole procedure.

Good boy!!!

Ok! It's time you took that thing out of my mouth now!

Sweet Molly had already had her teeth cleaned before we arrived.
