The Mark

The Comma Butterfly
Polygonia c-album

The Comma butterfly is named for comma-like mark on underside of hind wing. The ragged wings are mottled brown and resemble dead leaves which are perfect camouflage for when the adult overwinters in hedges and undergrowth. It measures 24mm,feeds on Hops Stinging Nettle and Elm, and can be seen in light woodland hedgerows and gardens.

Great pictures. Hopefully I will soon see a Comma or two here! They moved up to this part of Scotland about eight years ago and are becoming more common.

Thank you Nancy:) How kind of you to suggest this idea. No I haven't thought about compiling a book,of my photos, but do make greeting cards with some choice photos, and have made videos.

Susan
Thank you Sue:) It's more of an orange colour really, and the depth of colour depends on the time of year.

Thank you Theresa:) Haven't seen a question mark butterfly, although they not only look similar but also share punctuation marks.

Hi Sonjia :-) What beautiful photos! The Comma is a lovely butterfly. I was hoping I might see an early butterfly at the weekend but in the woodland I visited the only thing I found was around 35mm of snow!!

If you have been having problems with spam via anonymous comments I can heartily endorse Theresa's advice. I have my computer set like that and have hardly ever had a problem.

Thank you Jan:)What a shame you didn't see any butterflies over the weekend:(I long to be outdoors but the rain is relentless, and I also haven't seen any butterflies lately. These shots were taken whilst we were on holiday.

Thank you for your confirmation of Theresa's advice. I will make good use of it.

Great series, Sonjia. This is a very beautiful butterfly. I love it. The nice colours and shape amaze me every time I see it. Last week I saw the first one in the Netherlands. I was totally surprised to see that butterfly so early in the year. Have a nice weekend. Greetings, Joke

Thank you Maria:)That's great! When you post some it will be a treat. I believe that a new butterfly garden is opening some time this summer, about 1hr and 30min away from where we live, and I'm also hoping to take some photos there.
