Enigma

One evening about three years ago I came across this unfamiliar sight. I stood there in disbelief as I took this photo with a small digital camera, because it was something I had never seen before, or since for that matter. It gave me quite a start, as it was so alien looking. Could it be some sort of reproductive process, or something more sinister!! Any ideas fellow bloggers, what is happening here?

Hi Adam!

Perhaps they are trying to eat, if they are indeed creatures!! I did look at the back of the leaves and they were in tact!

Many had those tiny balls attatched to them, but only one is shown on the photo.Strange eh!!

Hello Breathtaking!

Whatever they may be doing, it`s not a pleasant sight to watch; and I wouldn´t certainnly care to have them for neighbours on my small kitchen garden...as they always are up for some mischief...

Hello Vitor

You are quite right about it being an unpleasant sight, and perhaps they were up to no good, yet I could not help being intrigued.

What on earth are they I wonder!!

It is a plague of larvae that will eventually harm the plant. That's what I think. kisses

What ever they are,the picture is great!

Probably something quite harmless like the larvae of the cabbage white butterfly but I am no expert as you know!

Aren't they leaving eggs?
it's not bad, it's just nature working.. :)
Nice photo!

Brown Eyes

You are probably right Brown Eyes.
It's difficult to discover which larvae has one flat end which must be the head, however I will keep on researching. Thank you for your
comment.
Kisses.

Thank you Dimi! It was taken with my AHP photo smart R5o7 camera.

Nice to hear from you again! Well I know it's not the Cabbage White
larvae, because that is green.I have been researching this for three years, and still haven't come up with anything.Nothing I have looked at on Google looks remotely like this.I'll just have to keep on trying!
Thank you for your visit.:-)

Sweet

Hi!
They could be leaving eggs, as they were not eating themselves, and
were motionless.Quite honestly I was'nt sure what I was looking at,
but I was facinated by what was for me a most unusual sight.Nature
just doing it's thing, seems about right to me.
Thank you soo much for your visit.

I don't know, Breathtaking. It intrigues me too. Greetings, Joke

It's not a pretty sight,but it is
as you say intriguing, and I hope that one day I'll discover what they are.

Thank you for passing by:)

Looks like the staged aftermath of an insects production of Othello - with bodies lying about everywhere. Deceived Othello, defamed Desdemona, treatcherous Iago and Emilia his outraged wife.
It's good to know that Shakespeare is appreciated even by maggots....or something.

Hi Ian! X

It's a dramatic scene for sure, you just feel that something dreadful is about to happen!! I went back there some days later but there was no sign of them.

i've seen different kinds of worms but i'd never seen anything like this.i guess these creatures are the ones who create and leave some kind of bubbles on the leaves. i don't know if you have seen such leaves but i've seen a lot and i just know that they've been inhabited by worms.

Hi Sue!

Alien to me anyway!!:)

Hi Sonjia - I dont think they are either reproductive or sinister. I think they are the cases of a micro moth. This is the stage between larva and moth; similar to the chyrsalis af a butterfly.

Breathtaking said...

Jerry
Hi Jerry!
That they are cases rather than worms makes sense, as they were imobile, and not eating their way through the leaf.

Thank you Jerry:)

Oby te niemiłe "paskudy" nie zjadły liści . Pozdrawiam.
I hope these unpleasant "villians" not eat the leaves. Yours.

ShySongbird said...

I've been puzzling over this for a week now Sonjia :-) I am now wondering if they are something to do with the tree itself which may have fallen there, seeds perhaps or the empty cases of seeds. Perhaps even some that have fallen from a neighbouring tree?

Breathtaking said...

Giga
I did'nt see any sign that they were eating Giga, and they didn't damage the leaf.

Breathtaking said...

ShySongbird
Hmm, I had thought about them being seeds Jan, and regret that I wasn't more vigilent at the time, and inspected them more thoroughly.
I remember that it was getting dark, and I planned to go back the following day, but for whatever reason which escapes me now, I did'nt.It was four or five days later before I eventually revisited this place, but there was no sign of them, and it has puzzled me ever since.

Martha Z said...

Seed or larva, they look like bird food.
